Imperial Russia: 25 Rubles (1909)

*
Denomination: 25 Rubles Year of First Issue: 1909 Governing Body: Czar Nicholas II
*
The 25 Ruble note, first seen in 1909, proves to be an interesting printing challenge for anyone but the Imperial mint. The front of the 25 Ruble, which features the denomination and a two-color mosaic in the center of the note, is almost completely pink, with only a few slight changes in hues across the front. The back, however, has two colors: a pink half and a light green half, which blend into each other at the center of the back of the 25 Ruble. Also, the space left on the back of the pink half of the 25 Ruble is meant for the watermark of Czar Alexander III. This is the first denomination in this series which has a watermark of a former ruler, a feature yet unseen in the 1-10 Ruble notes. As with the other two 1909 banknotes (5 Ruble, 10 Ruble), two varieties exist: Konshin (1909-1912) and Shipov (1912-1917), the latter of which is seen in the above image.
